Spay & neuter
Spaying and neutering are essential procedures for preventing unwanted pregnancies and promoting long-term pet health. While elective, we recommend all pet owners strongly consider them to reduce the risks of reproductive cancers and undesirable hormone-driven behaviors. The right timing depends on your pet’s gender, species, age, and expected adult size—we’ll help you navigate the current research and decide what’s right for your pet.

Soft tissue surgery
Dr. Putnam is comfortable performing a wide range of soft tissue surgeries—procedures on the skin, muscles, or organs—using modern surgical techniques, advanced monitoring equipment, and qualified team members to ensure pet safety and comfort at all times.
- Masses and skin — mass removals, mass biopsies, skin biopsies, cancer surgeries
- Abdominal — liver biopsy, splenectomy, intestinal and stomach surgeries, preventative gastropexy, bladder surgery

Dr. Putnam had extensive surgery mentoring as an intern in a busy specialty hospital, with a veterinary surgeon who believed that all vets should be competent in a variety of different surgeries. She has continued to hone her skills over the last 20 years.

Emergency surgery
When it can’t wait.
Some surgeries are planned weeks ahead. Others begin the moment you walk through the door. Both elective and emergency surgeries are offered at Bonnie Mara Animal Hospital, with the same focus on patient safety and comfort.

Hemoabdomen and splenectomy
Internal bleeding in the abdomen, often from a bleeding spleen.

GDV (bloat) surgery
A stomach that has filled with gas and twisted; an emergency, most often in deep-chested dogs.

Stomach or intestinal foreign body surgery
Removing something swallowed that won’t pass, including gastrotomy, enterotomy, and resection and anastomosis.

An infected uterus.

Knowing our limits
When a specialist is the right call.
Dr. Putnam is not a specialist, and does not perform fracture repair, orthopedic surgeries (such as TPLO), surgeries involving the lungs, heart, brain or spine, or more complicated soft tissue surgeries.
At Bonnie Mara Animal Hospital, our ultimate goal is patient success. We have a good relationship with local specialists and can help organize referral when that is the best option for your pet.
Patient safety
Every patient, their own protocol.
Every patient under anesthesia at Bonnie Mara has a protocol built around them, multi-modal medication, an IV catheter and fluids, and a technician whose only job is watching their vitals until they’re up and about.
